Why this Matters

Democracy depends on elections happening on time. Our leaders cannot be allowed to simply delay the date of an election because they don't want representatives from opposition parties to win.

But it isn't just local democracy at stake.

The delay to the election will also hold up billions of pounds of investment in Hampshire & the Isle of Wight, that was due to be transferred to the newly elected Mayor in 2026.

If Labour gets their way, delaying the Mayoral election by two years would delay important local investment too.

That means less money for road improvement, high street and town centre regeneration, public safety measures and much more.

And it makes it more likely that local councils will have to put up council tax to fill the gap - meaning you'll end up paying for Labour's delay.

Why are Labour Doing This?

Labour don't care about Hampshire & The Isle of Wight. Keir Starmer knows that the mayoral election is a choice between Donna Jones, the Conservative Party's candidate and Nigel Farage's Reform candidate.

He knows Labour can't win locally, and so is choosing to delay the election as well as billions in local investment.

This isn’t just a delay - it’s a denial

Local Democracy is being pushed aside. Because Keir Starmer knows Labour can't win.
Billions in local investment is also being delayed. Which means less money for roads, high streets, town centres and public safety, and higher council tax.
It sets a dangerous precedent. Future governments shouldn't be able to delay elections because they think they might not win.
